A Meditation for Good Friday:
"Aurë entuluva! Day shall come again!" This battle cry was delivered by one of the greatest heroes in the legendarium of Middle-Earth, Hurin the Steadfast of Dor-lomin. This cry came at the end of the Battle of Unnumbered Tears, one of the most tragic and expansive defeats of good at the hands of the Evil One, Morgoth. Hurin held the rear guard against the forces of Morgoth so that the remnant of the armies could escape to safety. Out of those who would survive would come one who would serve as the star of high hope, heralding the destruction of Morgoth once and for all.
Hurin, alone left alive and surrounded the bodies of his brother Huor and their soldiers, cried out "Aurë entuluva! Day shall come again!", seeing with the eyes of death that, though this day would end in unimaginable darkness, dawn would soon break.
On Good Friday, we cry out "Aurë entuluva! Day shall come again!” Despite the darkness, horror, and death we saw at Golgotha, the Place of the Skull, so long ago and face now while living in this mortal coil, we know that in 3 days morning light will break. Day shall come again, and death itself will be utterly cast down. Even though we see at times with the eyes of death, Life and Light will shine forth into eternity, and the catastrophes of our existence will be utterly reversed. The Unnumbered Tears of this life will be wiped away; hope and joy will be renewed in the rising of Morning Light when we hear and see “He is not here, He is Risen!”
